A.S support at Hills Road College

I read about you in Parent Partnership Service. I used to be a member of NAS and of umbrella some years ago, but I lapsed because of the pressure on time, and because my son's needs didn't really fit what was on offer. However, my son (diagnosed with atypical autism) is now in year 11 at Melbourn Village College (main stream) and the most appropriate college after GCSEs seems to be Hills Road, where he could study maths, computing and electronics. However he experiences a high level of physical fear when walking anywhere alone, and to cope with this at Melbourn he has a teaching assistant accompanying him at all times. He does not think that he will be able to cope with college because of having to move around from one class to another.
Do you know of any one with a similar problem to my son who attends Hills Road, and who could let me know if it is likely that staff at Hills Road would enable him to cope with moving from one location to another. I'd appreciate any information you could give me on this.

Thank you
Margaret

Re: A.S support at Hills Road College

If you haven't done so already I suggest you talk to Glen Taylor at Hills Road.  MY son is just finishing 2 years at Hills Road and Glen and his team have been very supportive throughout.  I would have thought that if there is no-one accompanying your son to lessons then they might be able to set up some kind of buddying system where another student from each of your son's teaching groups accompanies him to the next room.  Given the subjects your son is interested in it seems likely there will be other students doing the same subjects who would be willing to help.
